SERVICE ACTIVITIES

PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS OF THE ROTARY CLUB

CLUB SERVICE COMMITTEES
Highway Cleanup
Twice a year cleanup of a two-mile stretch of Rt. 68 west of Agway. We need to clean both sides of the highway.
Public Relations
This committee’s job is to promote our club locally on cable, in the Butler Eagle and on WBUT/WISR. Rotary is challenging all clubs to be more progressive in telling the public when we do community service projects and when we make donations to non profit organizations or other causes.
COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEES
Pancake Festival
Our club has been working with Lifesteps, formerly Easter Seals, for nearly 50 years. Our Club was the founder of Easter Seals in Butler and many of our members worked to transport crippled children to Pittsburgh hospitals for treatment. Our efforts raise from $3500 to $4000 each year.
Golf Ball Drop
This event is held in September. We Buy or Sell numbered chances and then on the day of the event the Butler City Fire Dept. drops up to 2000 plastic golf balls into a special “catcher” to determine the number of the first ball caught. The winner gets a cash prize or merchandise valued around $1000.00 and our profit is based on the number of chances sold.
Turkey Roundup
Dale Pinkerton, Founder

Member Dale Pinkerton came up with the idea to raise money to provide a hot meal for the hundreds of needy families on Butler County. Beginning on November first, we send letters and call possible donors to ask for their help in raising money to purchase ten dollar food vouchers at Friedman’s and Giant Eagle. There are 17 food cupboards in the county and we give some of the vouchers to them to distribute. We also give vouchers directly to the Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels, St. Vincent DePaul Society, several churches that offer free meals, and any other organization in need. Average receipts total $15,000.00/yr.

Dictionary Project

We donate a paperback dictionary to every third grade student in our coverage area. This includes Butler, Moniteau, Butler Catholic, South Butler, Penn Academy, and St. Wendelin. In all, we distribute 1000 dictionaries every year in September as school begins.

HS Essay Contest

Every even numbered year we offer the students from Knoch and Butler in grades 9 through 12 the opportunity to win cash prizes for the best essay on a subject related to the voting system.

Golf Outing
Held each year in the fall, this event is one of our largest fundraisers but it takes a lot of work by all members to get teams, sponsors and to arrange for the days events at a local golf course.
VOCATIONAL SERVICE COMMITTEES
Farm City Night
This event is not a fundraiser but it is our club’s way of thanking the people who provide the food that we put on our tables day in and day out. Each November we work with the Farm Extension Service to invite farmers and their family members to join us in a dinner that is now held at the BC3 Convocation Center.
INTERNATIONAL SERVICE COMMITTEES
Summer Exchange

This is a program for students in 11th or 12th grade who would like to spend two weeks abroad to learn different cultural habits and then return with their host student to spend two weeks in their home in Butler. Students of Rotarians are eligible for this program.

RYLA

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award program is for high school students who are selected because they are leaders in their class. The club pays a fee to send them to Westminster College in June for a week of leadership skills and fellowship with other students from the 44 clubs in our district. Students of Rotarians are eligible for this program.

ROVA
The Rotary Outstanding Vo-Tech Award is a new program that is very similar to RYLA but it is solely for vocational students. They spend a week at the McKeever Learning Center and do many of the same leadership training as above. Students of Rotarians are eligible for this program.
Ambassadorial Scholarships

Each year our District in northwestern PA is able to offer a $25,000.00 scholarship to a college student. They will travel abroad to spend one year at a college or university with all expenses paid. The money for this scholarship comes from our district’s combined donations to the Rotary Foundation. Students of Rotarians are not eligible for this award.

Rotary Foundation
Our club is a leader in donations to the Foundation and last year was one of the first clubs to report a 100% participation and every member donated at least $100.00. The Rotary Foundation is one of the most effective fund raising organizations in the world today and last year raised over 100 million dollars for humanitarian needs.
